Proof coins were historically made for the purpose of checking dies were correct before coins were mass-produced, but now they are often produced specifically with collectors in mind. Most proof coins are produced with special dies that are manually fed with with blanks or ‘planchets’. The dies are often pre-polished and pre-treated to yield shaper designs and rims, as well as smoother ‘fields’ – the areas of the coins not carrying a design. The proofs are struck multiple times under high pressure so that designs are properly registered.

The Proof American Eagle silver coin is a collector version of the popular American Eagle silver bullion coin produced by the United States Mint. There are limited supplies minted each year of these proof coins.

The American Eagle’s design is of Walking Liberty, which made her first appearance in 1916 on a half-dollar coin designed by Adolph Weinman. Walking Liberty is widely regarded as one of the most beautiful coins ever produced.

The obverse displays the word “LIBERTY”, which arches around the entire upper half of the coin. The date of the coin is under Liberty’s foot and “IN GOD WE TRUST” is to her left.

The coin’s reverse, designed by John Mercanti, shows a graceful eagle with a shield across its torso. The eagle has an olive branch in its right talon and arrows in its left. “E PLURIBUS UNUM” is on a banner clutched in the bird’s mouth while “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” arches across the top of the coin. Beneath the eagle you will find “1 OZ. FINE SILVER – ONE DOLLAR”. There is an inverted pyramid of 13 stars above the eagle’s head.

The process of creating an American Eagle silver proof coin is meticulous. Minting experts use special dies and manual feeding of the blank coins. To ensure a detailed coin design, the blank coins are struck multiple times. Each American Eagle silver proof is presented in an elegant presentation case with an official U.S. Mint Certificate of Authority that represents the U.S. government guarantee of the coin’s gold content, weight and purity.

The size and color reproduction of the coins shown do not correspond to the actual coins.
